Mother’s Day, as we celebrate it today, started as a religious event. People in the UK traditionally returned to their ‘mother church’ on the fourth Sunday of Lent for a church service. The mother church was usually the local parish church where your Christening took place or the main church or cathedral in the area.
Many working-class people, such as domestic servants, were given the day off to visit church for the occasion, often with their own mothers and family. It was uncommon for entire families to have time off together, and they often celebrated accordingly. As the fourth Sunday in Lent usually falls in mid-spring, people would pick wildflowers to give to their mothers or place in the church. The day became known as Mothering Sunday.
Over time Mothering Sunday has evolved into Mother’s Day - a tradition of giving cards, gifts, and flowers and spending quality time with your mother. It’s an opportunity to say thank you for everything your mum has done for you.
One of the best ways to show your mum how much she means to you is with a heartfelt Mother’s Day message, whether that's in a card or alongside a bunch of flowers. This page will help you choose the perfect Mother’s Day messages for your mum this year.
